The Sd.Kfz. 253 leichter Gepanzerter Beobachtungskraftwagen was a light observation half-track belonging to the family of the Sd.Kfz. 250, but unlike the latter, the superstructure of the vehicle was completely enclosed at the top. It also had two upper hatches, one of which allowed the installation of a scissor telescope, two Fu 2 and Fu 6 radio sets, and a retractable external antenna. It was developed as a command vehicle for the Sturmgeschütz assault gun batteries. During 1942 it was replaced by an additional Stug due to its vulnerability when operating alongside the assault guns. The rest of vehicles available from the 253 built by Demag/Wegman up to 1941 were assigned to various roles, from observation vehicles to artillery, command and even anti-partisan fighting. Some of them were fitted with an armoured shield with a machine gun for self-defence and at least one was fitted with a Panzer I turret with two machine guns.
