Colonel Creighton Abrams’ M4A3 “Thunderbolt IV” during the liberation of the Siege of Bastogne. Armed with a high-velocity 76 mm M1A1 gun in T-23 turret, this Sherman was better prepared to fight German tanks than the standard model with 75 mm gun. With Ford GAA V8 gasoline engine and VVSS suspension, it implemented an improved 47-degree welded hull and two larger hatches compared to the previous hulls. Also in the turret it had a new hatch for the gun pointer. The armor was also revised and it was no longer necessary to apply external plates to reinforce the weak points of both the turret and the hull.
