24-ton assault howitzer Sturmhaubitze 42 Ausf.E/F 10.5cm (StuH 42 E/F) armed with the 10.5cm gun. It was developed on the basis of the Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.E/F in order to provide close infantry support, while the StuG IIIs armed with the 7.5cm StuK 40 were used in anti-tank role. They were integrated into assault artillery battalions (Sturmartillerie Abteilung), composed of three batteries each, with one Zug or StuH 42 and two StuG platoons. Although about 1,210 StuH 42 were built between 1941 and 1942, they were used until the end of the war, many of them improved.
