57.8 ton heavy tank Pz.pfw VI Tiger Ausf. E mid production. It had an improved turret with a new hatch for the commander that offered a lower profile, which kept the formidable 8.8 cm KwK 36 L/56 gun as the main armament. The chassis was still very similar to the initial model, although the ability to submerge was eliminated and air filtering was simplified. It entered combat on the Eastern Front in early 1944. Some Tiger were coated with Zimmerit, the cement paste used to prevent magnetic mines from adhering to the tank’s armor. Otto Carius was one of the tank aces who used this model in Russia where he achieved some 150 recognized victories. Around 1,350 units of the three versions of Tigers were produced between 1942 and 1944.
