24-ton assault gun Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.G (or StuG III G) armed with the StuK 40 L/48 7.5 cm. gun with a normal mantlet or a Saukopf (pig’s head) mantlet. It also includes the Sturmhaubitze 42 (or StuH 42) version with a 10.5 cm Sturmhaubitze gun. All of them can be built with external machine gun operated manually or remotely, and with Schürtzen armored skirts. Based on the chassis of the Panzer III, it formed the backbone of the self-propelled assault artillery to give close support to the infantry, an original idea of Erich von Manstein. The first prototype was presented in 1937 and a total of 9.400 StuG III and 1.210 StuH 42 were produced until the German capitulation in 1945. They were used by the Axis allies during the conflict: Finland, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.
