The formidable and legendary 8.8 cm Flak 36/37 anti-aircraft gun, which proved to be a lethal anti-tank weapon as early as the Spanish Civil War, where it made its combat debut. The Flak 36/37 was mounted in a cruciform aircraft gun carriage, which was fitted with a distinctive anti-tank shield at the outbreak of World War II. Different versions of the 8.8 cm gun were produced, some of them specifically for firing at ground targets, and it was mounted on vehicles, ships, submarines and fortifications. Known to the Germans as the Acht-Acht, it was present on all war fronts in Europe and North Africa.
