The American M3 half-track formed the basis of Allied armored infantry during World War II and the early part of the Cold War. Inspired by the traction system of the French Citroën-Kégresse half-track, the White Motor Company set out to develop a highly mobile lightly armored vehicle, capable of carrying an infantry squad of 10 soldiers. As defensive armament it had a Browning machine gun, either the heavy M2 Cal .50 or the M1919 Cal .30. About 43,000 units were manufactured, including numerous variants. After the World War, it has been part of numerous armies around the world..
