Initial version of the Sd.Kfz. 162 Jagdpanzer IV/70 was a 25,8-tonne tank destroyer developed at the Vomag factory on the chassis of a Panzer IV Ausf.H that mounted the 7,5 cm L/70 KwK 42 gun of the Panther tank. Much better armed than its 7.5cm PaK 39 gun armed predecessor, it entered combat in the Battle of the Bulge. Known as the Guderian Duck because the heavy L/70 long gun and thick frontal armor caused a significant loss of mobility in difficult terrain, the Jagdpanzer IV/70 proved to be an effective and fearsome adversary that formed the basis of the Panzerjaegers Abteilung of the armored divisions during the last stage of the war. It was also used to cover the needs of the Panzer regiments, short of Panther and Panzer IV tanks.
