The M4A3 with a 105mm M4 howitzer was a medium tank for direct infantry support as assault gun with a superior main armament to the standard Sherman 75mm. It was also sometimes used for indirect fire as self-propelled artillery. With Ford GAA V8 gasoline engine and VVSS suspension. It implemented an improved 47 degree welded hull and two larger hatches compared to the previous hulls. The armour was also revised and it was no longer necessary to apply external plates to reinforce the weak points of the hull. The turret also had a new hatch for the gunner’s gun. Also in the turret was a new hatch for the gun pointer. It went into production in February 1944 and just over 3,000 were built by 1945.
